    The 2014 Society for Animation Studies conference hosted by Sheridan College was from June 16 - 19, 2014. As Animation Studies continues to develop as a discipline, the dialogue that has opened up between more traditional academic research into the field and what we might call ‘industry-facing’ or applied research has become more important. The critical study of animation from within higher education institutions like Sheridan represents one of the many areas in which the industry can grow. Every SAS conference has its own distinct tone and flavour because we are truly international in our membership and we devolve conference organization annually to the host institution. This means that this year’s conference is strongly allied to Sheridan’s industry focus – not least with Corus warmly welcoming conference goers to their HQ for parts of the conference. SAS provides such a welcoming environment for new members, and a terrific forum to discuss animation from a multitude of perspectives. It is within this fertile and nurturing atmosphere that we decided to focus our conference on the animation artist. As a tribute to all artists whose efforts fuel our work, and in the spirit of the centenary of celebrated National Film Board of Canada animator, Norman McLaren, the 2014 SAS Conference is named “The Animator”.     Att stimulera flersprÄkighet i förskolan - en studie om pedagogiskt arbete i en fransksprÄkig förskola

    Sammanfattning Studiens syfte har varit att undersöka pedagogernas resonemang kring förutsĂ€ttningar (dvs. förĂ€ldrarnas roll och franskans plats i Sverige) för att utveckla flersprĂ„kighet. Studien har ocksĂ„ en praktisk ansats dĂ„ den andra frĂ„gestĂ€llningen Ă€r hur pedagogerna arbetar för att utveckla franska sprĂ„ket. Studien har genomförts pĂ„ en förskola med fransk sprĂ„kprofil. Majoriteten av pedagogerna pĂ„ en fransksprĂ„kig förskola har intervjuats (11). De kvalitativa intervjuerna föregicks av tvĂ„ dagars observation av verksamheten. Pedagogerna ser goda förutsĂ€ttningar för att kompensera för att franskan inte talas i majoritetssamhĂ€llet genom att sjĂ€lva tala sprĂ„ket och anvĂ€nda andra kĂ€llor för sprĂ„klig input sĂ„som olika typer av media. FörĂ€ldrarna ses som en mycket viktig förutsĂ€ttning att kunna utveckla flersprĂ„kighet. Hemmets och skolans arbete stödjer varandra oavsett om förĂ€ldrarna har franska som modersmĂ„l eller inte. Pedagogerna arbetar för att utveckla franska sprĂ„ket genom att ha som mĂ„lsĂ€ttning att sjĂ€lva alltid prata franska med barnen. Principen kan frĂ„ngĂ„s vid exempelvis konflikthanteringssituationer eller för att sĂ€kerstĂ€lla att barnet kĂ€nner sig tryggt. Pedagogerna arbetar för att utveckla franskan i olika pedagogiska aktiviteter sĂ„som samling, lĂ€sestund, sĂ„ngstund. SprĂ„ket utvecklas ocksĂ„ i olika kulturella aktiviteter dĂ„ man firar traditioner med tillhörande sĂ„nger och exempelvis matlagning. Traditioner Ă€r Ă€ven utgĂ„ngspunkt för samtal med jĂ€mförande perspektiv. Man arbetar dels lĂ€rarstyrt, men Ă€ven med fri lek. SprĂ„ket stimuleras i rutiner och omvĂ„rdnad genom Ă„terkommande fraser som associeras till situationer vid pĂ„klĂ€dning, matsituation, blöjbyten m.m. Pedagogiska konsekvenser av resultatet Ă€r att denna typ av ”sprĂ„kbad” kan vara en god modell för modersmĂ„lsundervisning, men ocksĂ„ ge barn med andra modersmĂ„l möjlighet att lĂ€ra sig sprĂ„k i förskolan.     Digital Technology & the Toronto Animation Community

    This video is one of two components of a graduate thesis. Its main purpose is to support the written component of the thesis which investigates the effect of digital technology on the Greater Toronto Area Animation Community (GTAAA). It breaks up the community into 4 separate sectors: Industrial, Independent, Emergent and Educational. I conducted Interviews with members of all four sectors and though the documentary is but a small sample of the data collected i believe it provides important insights that underpin the emergence of digital tools in animation production, roughly between 1994-20
